This photo was used by Sears Roebuck & Company, a major mail-order catalogue department store that sold goods of all kinds (including clothing) all over the United States. The boy and girl are shown wearing the tan cotton long stockings that children of both sexes wore during the early decades of the twentieth century. As short trousers and skirts became shorter, the long stockings that children wore to school had to be knitted longer. They had to be worn with garter waists and supporters.
